Another great Fairtrade Fortnight 2019 - "Calling all chocolate fans! "

The Deputy Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Wendy Johnson stopped by to support Warrington Fairtrade Steering Group at their event in Golden Square on March 2nd.

The group were promoting a living wage for worldwide growers of cacao, sugar, bananas and other Fairtrade products. This year’s theme was “She Deserves” and focused on the crucial role of women in developing countries, in transforming their local communities for the better.

Almost 400 Warrington residents signed the Fairtrade Foundation’s petition calling for the UK government to “make sure that any new global trade deals with developing countries put poverty reduction first, delivering living incomes for all, especially women.” Shoppers also got a chance to try Fairtrade chocolate, fruit juice and cakes made with Fairtrade ingredients.

Jackie Hancock, a member of the organising Fairtrade group, said “ We had some great conversations with shoppers, who were keen to sign the petition when they learnt more about the difficult lives of cocoa farmers in West Africa who’s average earnings are 74p a day, when they actually need a living income of 1.86 a day to provide for their families with dignity. ”
